Do you come to worship starved for God?

October 23, 2012

Here’s a great video clip of John Piper encouraging his church to come to corporate worship hungry for God. I pray that the people of Longview Point would come to worship hungry this Sunday!

Hope in King Jesus

October 8, 2012

In this political cycle it is easy to get cynical or fearful or a little bit of both. As followers of Christ we can get discouraged by political agendas, media, and worldviews that are so ungodly. I encourage you to be involved in the political process. Be familiar with issues and candidates. Vote based on biblical values not personalities. But there’s one thing I want to encourage you not to do. Don’t worry! There is a day coming when we will have a perfect Ruler and everyone will recognize His authority! We see this clearly in the book of Isaiah.

The messages that God gave to His people through the prophet Isaiah cycle back and forth between severe judgment and glorious hope. God wanted His people to know they would be judged for their idolatry and rebellion but He also wanted them to understand He was not giving up on His plan of redemption. He was going to fell the tree of Judah but a stump would remain (Is. 6:12-13). God would preserve a faithful remnant of people so that He could preserve the Jewish nation so that He could send the Messiah. All of this was in keeping with His promise to Abraham, that through his descendants all of the peoples of the earth would be blessed (Gen. 12:3).

So in Isaiah we see some wonderful passages sprinkled throughout the foreboding messages of certain judgment. These wonderful passages speak of what it will be like when the Messiah reigns over all the earth. Sometimes it’s difficult to tell if these passages are referring to the millennial reign of Christ or to the reign of Christ in the new heavens and new earth, or perhaps, both. The point is that there is a time coming when Jesus will be worshipped by all, Jesus will reign, and His people will be with Him.

In Isaiah 33, we catch a glimpse of our perfect future home and our beautiful King. Notice two things:
1) We will be in the presence of Jesus
Isaiah 33:17 says that our eyes, “will behold the king in his beauty.” What a magnificent promise! In 1 John 3:3 we are told that, “we shall be like Him because we shall see Him as He is.” We will experience unfettered joy as our faith becomes sight and we see the unveiled glory of Christ.

2) Jesus will reign
On that day, the LORD will carry out the functions that are now being carried out by human government. Consider v.22, “For the LORD is our judge; the LORD is our lawgiver; the LORD is our king; he will save us.” In other words when Jesus comes back to set everything right and sits on His throne, reigning over everyone and everything, He will be in perfect control. He will be the judicial, legislative, and executive branches all in one!

What hope the Christ-follower has! We will see our beautiful Savior and we will worship our King unhindered by the distractions of sin and ungodliness. What a day that will be! Until then, let’s keep our eyes fixed on Jesus daily and let’s rest in the hope of our promised future. Don’t worry. The King is coming!
