Mightier than Your Chaos

I recently read Psalm 93 and was blessed by the emphasis on God’s power. The Psalm begins in v.1 by speaking of God’s greatness:

The LORD reigns, he is robed in majesty; the LORD is robed; he has put on strength as his belt. Yes the world is established; it shall never be moved.

In verse 2 the Psalmist focuses on God’s eternal nature as the sovereign God:

Your throne is established from of old; you are from everlasting.

Then the Psalm takes a dramatic turn in verse 3 as it begins to describe the fury of the raging sea:

The floods have lifted up, O LORD, the floods have lifted up their voice; the floods lift up their roaring.

Why does the Psalmist begin to describe raging waters? The ESV Study BIble explains:

  • To an Israelite, the raging sea (also called floods and many waters) was the most vivid emblem of uncontrollable chaos.

Maybe you can identify with that verse right now. Maybe you feel like your life is uncontrollable chaos. Maybe you feel like you are about to go under. Maybe you have been wounded badly by the storms of life. If so, take heart at the next verse:

Mightier than the thunders of many waters, mightier than the waves of the sea, the LORD on high is mighty!

Did you get that? God is mightier than the problems we face in life. He is stronger than the pain we experience. His sustaining and healing power is unlimited. When you feel like your life is in turmoil, remember that God is King over the flood. He is in control. He rules. He reigns. He has a purpose. He will make the storms cease and the flood waters recede in His perfect timing.

When you feel like life has become a mighty flood, remember that God is stronger. You can trust Him through it all. If you know Jesus, He is your Father! Our Father will never abandon us even when chaos is all we see.

Praying for all of the hurting in our faith family,

Pastor Wade
